Bayerischer Journalisten-Verband (BJV) Press Photo Exhibition, Munich Airport

The Bayerischer Journalisten Verband's (Bavarian Journalist Union, BJV) Press Photos of the Year exhibition continues to run until May 1 in the Munich International Airport, Terminal 2, fourth floor, south check-in area (near Lufthansa).

The BJV is the Bavarian arm of the Deutscher Journalisten-Verband (German Journalist Union, DJV) and is the administrator of the awards.  In addition to the winning photos for 2016, the top photos of 2016, as well as previous winners, are on display.  The BJV awards are jury-selected and designed to support and illustrate the importance of quality journalism and photojournalism in an era where editorial standards and payments are being lowered.

August 10, 2016, Brooklyn Bridge
After having traversed the 59th Street Bridge, then the George Washington Bridge, I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge as it began to rain heavily on the span.

Villa Charlotte Bronte, Bronx, NYC

The famed Villa Charlotte Bronte, built in the early 1900s on the southern edge of Spuyten Duyvil, the Bronx, overlooking the transition between the Hudson and Harlem rivers.  The Villa continues to be a holdout against urban development, as evidenced by the more citylike apartment buildings to either side of it.

Along the way from the 1-line, one will often see stone homes that hark back to the mostly Dutch origins of the modern era of the region.  The people of the area are extraordinarily friendly and I had several conversations along the way with the friendly, welcoming residents.

Shot in Harlem, NYC.  Contrary to popular beliefs, Harlem is extremely safe- so much so, people taking mid-day naps in public are a common sight.

Hamburg

When I first began expoloring photography in 2011, social issues quite naturally became one of my biggest focal points.

In the case of Germany, many here will claim "homelessness does not exist in Germany" or go even further to claim "homelessness is only an American problem".  However, it certainly does exist, not only in Germany, but worldwide, and certainly throughout Europe- west, east, north, south.  In the case of the United States, there have been attempts, such as in Utah, to help reduce or eliminate homelessness, though there have been some criticisms of the program and if it was actually even effective.  However, the fact remains that attempts were and are being made to solve the situations in some way.  In Germany, homelessness, by contrast, is a dissonant topic that people would rather not discuss because it shatters the image of Europe's wealthiest country that has heavy influence over the rest of the continent.  However, beyond not discussing it, people go much further to try and unrealistically claim it "does not exist" at all.

Due to this, documenting homelessness became a strong focal point in my travels throughout Europe and the United States, often with startling similarities.

Exodus

The legendary Bay-Area thrash metal band Exodus, performing with the legendary Steve "Zetro" Souza on vocals once again.

Exodus has been, for over thirty years, one of the mainstays of the Bay-Area thrash scene, along with Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Testament, and others. So intertwined is Exodus' history that it has been argued that they should have been on the "Big-Four" tour (with Slayer, Megadeth, and Metallica) instead of Anthrax. The familial relationships between the bands are also readily apparent; Chuck Billy of Testament was originally in Exodus, while Kirk Hammett was also in the band before being chosen as Dave Mustaine's replacement in Metallica.   Currently, Gary Holt records and plays live in Slayer, leaving room for Heathen guitarist Kragen Lum to fill his spot on stage, alongside fellow Heathen guitarist Lee Altus.

The shows are aggressive and high-energy, but friendly and camaraderie is in no short supply.  Due to this, it was appropriate to also include shots of the crowd due to how much of the experience comes from them.

New Jersey's Symphony X- one of the premier prog metal bands in the world.  Symphony X performs a neo-classical form of prog metal built around the incredible ability of guitarist/songwriter Michael Romeo.  In contrast to numerous other bands in the prog metal subgenre, Symphony X plays much heavier and more aggressively (particularly since The Odyssey) while maintaining the "epicness" that fans are accustomed to.

The shows are dark, smoky affairs, with incredible interaction between vocalist Russell Allen and the audience.
