From a rally in Zorneding, a village just outside of Munich.
Zorneding has received large amounts of fame from inside and now outside of Germany for one of their churches having a black, Congolese (and German citizen) priest, Olivier Ndjimbi-Tshiende, who was racially insulted by members of the CSU (Christian Social Union political party), which then resulted in endless death threats against him. He recently decided to leave due to the threats.
The village organized this rally in "solidarity" with him, but I have to insert a critique in here: this is yet another case of "too little, too late" in Germany, where the threat wasn't taken seriously enough, with people only going out in the streets after their story has made national and international headlines. There was little fuss while the priest was still in his position and receiving death threats. Now that the media is there, much like numerous incidents in Dresden and throughout Germany, the people of the village put together an action which appeared to me to be more of a PR stunt about themselves to tell people they aren't racists. The fact still remains that Olivier Ndjimbi-Tshiende had to leave and there was only a decisive PR action afterward, when the media came in. This is identical to what I personally observed in Dresden- the Dresdners were only protesting when the media swooped in to cover their radical-right uprising (Pegida). Now the city is essentially a symbol of right-wing radicalism and is beyond any question a rogue, failed state. However, Dresdners are not concerned with their social problems and lack of cultural education and isolation, but rather how they are perceived and their reputations. Only after the international media began covering them were they suddenly and decisively against racism and right-wing extremism and terror. In a few days, much like in Dresden, the people of Zorneding will forget this ever happened. However, the fact remains that this action had little content related to Olivier Ndjimbi-Tshiende, while the people of Zorneding walked away actually believing they fought against the rise of right-wing terrorism.
The reality is that right-wing terror won in Zorneding.
It would have actually have been nice if people even discussed the priest and his work and his life to instill even a slight bit of a hint that the event was about him, rather than about their own fears regarding Reputationsverlust (loss of reputation).
Due to the fact that Olivier Ndjimbi-Tshiende was mostly an incidental aspect to this PR action, I've made a very small statement by using his name as the title of this entry. That was the very least Zorneding could have done for him.
